Severus Alexander, early 20th century cast fake AE39 of Phokaia, Ionia. AD 222-235. A K M AYR CE ALEXANDROC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. EP CTR M AYR FWKEWN EYTYXOYC, Dionysos standing left, wearing short robe, surrounded by a vine, holding thyrsos in left hand and grasping the vine with right hand. Berlin 18209170; Bernhart 715. Note: This coin is an early 20th century cast fake from the Löbbecke collection. Kurt Regling added an appropriate note to the file card when the coin was added to the Berlin collection. Confirmation of this can be found in the reverse legend. The magistrate named in the exergue of the coin (M. Aurelios Eutyches) is known for Phokaia, but not for the time of Severus Alexander, during whose reign the magistrate in Phokaia was M. Aurelios Theodosianos. It is also highly unlikely that the magistrate's name would appear in the exergue, as it does on this fake. Image courtesy of the Berlin cabinet.
