Nero and Poppaea, struck by Kotys I, King of Bosporos, AE21, 12 Units. NERWNOC KLAUDIOV CEBAKTOU KAICAROC, Laureate and draped bust of Nero right. POPPHIAC KEBACTHC, Draped bust of Poppaea left; monogram of Kotys before neck, IB (mark of value) below. MacDonald 332 corr.; Anokhin 351; RPC I 1929 note; Frolova and Ireland p. 81, Series IV. With permission of cngcoins.com, auction 299, Lot: 92. March 2013. Ex CNG eAuction 157, lot 68. MacDonald and RPC deny the authenticity of this issue (unique when RPC was published), believing the portrait of Nero to be too young for the time of his marriage to Poppaea. MacDonald remarks that these are probably created from worn examples of the Nero with Agrippina (MacDonald 331) issue. However, Frolova and Ireland located five examples from two die pairs.
