Hadrian. (117-138 AD). Silver cistophoric tetradrachm (10.55 
gm). Mint C. 
HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P, bare head right / COS III, cult 
image of Artemis Ephesia facing front, arms extended left 
and right over stags who turn their heads back to regard her 
and incense burners on three-pronged feet. Metcalf Type 88 
(9 specimens). BMCRE 1061. Cohen 319 (25 Fr.). RIC 489. 
Same obverse die as Metcalf’s 331, but a new reverse die. 
Overstruck on an earlier cistophorus, perhaps the PAX type 
of Augustus, RPC 2203: the top of Augustus’ portrait and 
DIVI from his legend survive faintly  in the left obverse field. Very fine.
