            ΚΕΦΑΛΟΙΔΙ—ON, head of young Heracles right in lion skin headdress / 
            ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΩΤΑΝ, bull butting right on trapezoidal tablet, AK monogram

            856. Extremely rare: only the second known. This is probably one of 
            the only opportunities to own a silver coin from this city. Toned 
            good very fine.

            Cephaloedium fell to Dionysius of Syracuse in 396 BC. This drachm 
            belongs to the following years, when the city was garrisoned by the 
            Syracusan tyrant. Its unusual double legend seemingly names two 
            different cities. The Heracleotai mentioned on the reverse are 
            either Italian mercenaries from the city of Heraclea in Lucania, or 
            a troop of mercenaries dedicated to the service of Heracles; and the 
            obverse inscription, meaning “from Cephaloedium,” refers to the base 
            where they struck their emission of coinage.
