quadriga driven right by Athena; above, Nike flying left 
to crown her, artist's signature EXAKESTIDAS in tiny 
letters on exergual line, two prize amphorae in exergue 

KAMARINAION, head of young Heracles left in lion skin 
headdress. Westermark and Jenkins 149 (O8/R15). An 
attractive example with an unusually clear signature of 
the artist. Extremely fine 

Exakestidas, an artist who signed dies only at Camarina, 
was surely the author of both dies of this tetradrachm, 
though his signature appears only on the obverse. 
Exakestidas introduced the youthful, beardless type of 
Heracles at Camarina, replacing an image of strength and 
determination with one of idealized masculine beauty. 
The richly detailed and sensuous style of Exakestidas 
has been compared to that of Euainetus.
