SELEUCID KINGDOM. Demetrius II, 1st reign (145-138 BC). 
Silver drachm (3.36 gm). Perhaps Seleucia in Pieria. 
Diademed head of Demetrius II right / BASILEWS DHMHTRIOU 
NIKATORO[S],, anchor, flukes upward, PO in inner left 
field. Hoover, AJN 12 (2000), pl. 19, 4 (same obverse 
die). Cf. CSE 567-568. Extremely rare: only the second 
recorded example. Attractive portrait in high relief. 
Slight roughness before portrait. Extremely fine 

Hoover, AJN 12, p. 103, proposed the attribution to 
Seleucia in Pieria and read the letters PO as a date (SE 
170 = 142/1 BC). The latter interpretation may be 
correct, but there are other anchor drachms with a 
symbol or a monogram in this position, e.g., SNG Spaer 
1634-1635, opening the possibility that it is a control 
rather than a date.
