JUDAEA, Gaza. Circa 420-332 BC. AR Obol (12mm, 
0.58 gm). Imitating Athens. Head of Persian 
satrap right, wearing bashlyk with high peak and 
earflaps / AQEOwl standing right, olive branch 
over shoulder. Cf. Vestigia Leonis pl.XXVI, 11. 
VF, dark toning, a very weak strike but rare 
nonetheless.
The Gazan Athenian style drachms and fractions 
usually bear a very crude head on the obverse, 
making it difficult to determine if it is the 
head of Athena, or another portrait was 
intended. This piece is unusual in having a very 
clear head of a satrap, despite being weakly 
struck.
