[Freeman and Sear] Lot: 39

CRETE. Rhaucus. Ca. 300 BC. AR stater (10.88 gm). Poseidon
standing right, holding trident in left hand and draping
right arm around neck of horse standing right, its left
foreleg resting on a boulder / PAV—KION (retrograde),
trident head, dolphin downward to left. Svoronos 8, pl.
xxix, 13 (same dies). Le Rider pl. xxvi, 12. Rare. A few old
scratches. Toned very fine

Rhaucus occupied a fertile plain at the foot of Mt. Ida,
similar to the plains of Thessaly and Arcadia. The three
regions shared an economy based on livestock and the cult of
Poseidon Hippios, the patron of horses and the god of
springs.
