FS_12-164 Freeman & Sear - Mail Bid Sale 12. Lot: 164 CAPPADOCIAN KINGDOM: Ariarathes V. (ca. 163-130 BC). AR tetradrachm (15.52 gm). No date. Diademed head of Ariarathes V right / Athena standing left, holding Nike and resting hand on grounded shield, PAFI monogram in inner left field, MH monogram in exergue. Unpublished. This tetradrachm without a date is possibly an indication that it was struck before the king's 28th regnal year, which marked the beginning of his dated coinage. This king was identified as Ariarathes IV (ca. 220-163 BC) by Reinach, and this attribution was supported by Bono Simonetta, whilst Otto Morkholm's proposed the reattribution to Ariarathes V. Morkholm's regnal attributions are the more plausible, because the coinage allotted by Simonetta to Ariarathes V seems unworthy of a king famed for his cultural pretensions.
