CNG Web Product ID: 383 Price: $2,250.00 Denomination: Nomos Grade: EF attractively toned Reference: SNG Copenhagen 1776 Bruttium, Kroton. Circa 480-470 BC. AR Nomos (8.01 gm). QPO, tripod with fillets and serpents / Incuse eagle flying right. Cf. SNG ANS 287; SNG Copenhagen 1766. Toned EF, sharp strike. Rare, particularly so in high grade. $2,250. A rare and interesting variation on the unusual relief/incuse coins of Southern Italy. In this case, an incuse design different from the obverse has been chosen for the reverse, although the flying eagle's form does aproximate the structure of the obverse tripod. Apparently the intent was to choose a reverse design that would maximize the ability of the reverse, or punch die, to push metal into the obverse.
