ANCIENT FOURREE FORGERY. BOIOTIA, Thebes. Circa 395-338 BC. Fourre Stater (9.75 g). Agla-, magistrate. Struck ca 363-338 BC. Boeotian shield. AB-LA, Amphora; bunch of grapes above, all within incuse concave circle. Cf. Hepworth 1; cf. Head, Boeotia p. 64. Ancient forgery which must have been made some years after magistrate AG-LA issued his coins as, up to that time, there were no magistrate staters issued with grapes above as a symbol. Unless of course the "artist" had in mind the Boiotian League staters minted a good thirty years before. With permission of cngcoins.com, Triton IX, Lot 553. 9 January 2006.
