EMPIRE OF TREBIZOND. Andronicus I Gidon. (ca. 1222-1235 AD). Silver 
aspron trachy (2.95 gm). . Full-length figure of Virgin Mary, 
nimbate, standing facing, wearing tunic and maphorion, left hand 
raised in benediction, MHP in monogram and ÈV under marks of 
contraction in upper fields, star in left field / Fulllength figure 
of Christ Chalkites, bearded and nimbate, standing facing, wearing 
tunic and colobion and holding book of Gospels in left hand, IC and 
XC under marks of contraction in upper fields, o-X-Ë-A (sic) 
vertically in left field, K-H-TH (in ligature)-S vertically in right

Bendall points out that the final letter of the legend on the 
reverse is sometimes engraved as an S (as here) rather than as a C, 
and that this form does not seem to occur on the Nicaean coinage.
